Hi there,
I am just wondering if Avizo can load and plot netcdf data from WRF (Weather research and forecasting) model Cheers, Basit |

Hi Basit,
Yes, NetCDF format is supported. Avizo 6.3 support NetCDF4 CF1.0, while Avizo 7 will support CF1.1. You will need Avizo Green license in order to access this capability. Best, -Shawn |

Hi Shawn,
WRF outputs data in NETCDF classic/generic format that Avizo does not accept. I already tried many things but nothing seems to work. Apparently there are two possible solutions, one is to convert wrfout put into netcdf CF 1.0 or CF1.1 format and second is to add generic/classic netcdf format (which is widely used especially in geo science and meteorology) to avizo. For the first option, there should be some conversion utility/script that could transform classic netcdf to CF1.1. I am just wondering if Avizo people have any such utility that could be used for conversion. Cheers, Basit |

Dear Basit,
You could use the NCL utility to convert the WRF NetCDF to NetCDF-CF. http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/src/utils/wrfout_to_cf.ncl Regards, Jaguar |

Hi Jaguar,
Thanks for the post. I in fact already tried wrfout_to_cf.ncl. However, the script does not do the conversion properly and Avizo does not load the converted file at all. Unfortunately wrf people also do not provide any help on this script. If i would'nt find some other way for conversion then either I would dig in the code to make it right or consider some application other than avizo that could load classic netcdf format. Dear Basit,
IMHO you will need to post-process the output from wrfout_to_cf.ncl with a tool like cdo (https://code.zmaw.de/projects/cdo). I remember back more than 2 years that I successfully converted such data to be loaded into Avizo. Best Regards, Peter |
